BACKGROUND

Barcode Technology has been used since the early 70’s and is not a new concept. However with the new trend of mobile devices such as laptops and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), barcode technology has moved away from the cashier registers and out into the field. The uprising of wireless technology, such as Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Bluetooth Technology have furthermore given users the ability to use barcode scanners without limiting their range to the length of a cable.

It is because of these advancements in technology that the San Dimas Technology and Development center was asked to evaluate available mobile barcode technology. The evaluation entailed research of laser barcode scanners, various types of barcode labels, and software development kits. This evaluation is not intended to provide an all-in-one solution for all barcoding applications, but it is intended to provide you with the information needed to make an informed decision on how to put together the best barcoding system for your remote application.
